Exponents of the “War on Terror” like to excuse some vile and sweeping attitudes toward Muslims by claiming that Islam is not a race. And it isn’t, it’s a family of practices, attitudes and beliefs more or less freely adopted by its many adherents – like Christianity, accountancy, knitting, or speaking English. Discriminatory behaviour toward Muslims may not technically be racist in the same way as discrimination against some other protected characteristics, but it’s very much the same thing, even if words like “racism” are only a close metaphor and not a a literally exact description. If you are relying on the small print at this level, you are criticising your opponent’s choice of words, not defending your own behaviour. If you are metaphorically or loosely racist toward Muslims, you are literally and exactly a bigot, a zealot, a chauvinist, a partisan, and a sectarian.
